We must be crazy. We all thought it would be a good idea, but the second we arrived in Chicago, parked in the parking garage and ventured out into daylight, we saw the line. The enormous line. People waiting to get in to look at fish.
And we were among them.
Are we NUTS?
We did it for these guys...
My kids, my nieces, my nephews.
They were worth the ridiculous crowd, the overheated aquarium and the mounds of old women who A) Hit me with their oversized bag or B) Stopped directly in front of us, causing one (or more) of us to trip up the stairs.
I am not a crowd person. I like to be home, alone. I am a hermit. Going into the crowds gives me sweaty palms and heart palpitations... and yet... I did surprisingly well. Even when our stroller got a flat tire and was rendered useless.
I admit I am proud of my attitude.
Ain't nothin' gonna break-a-my stride, baby.
I am also not really a fish person, but give me a whale and a dolphin and I'm a happy girl. The last time we went to Shedd, we got neither of those (though we still had to pay the enormous $25/ticket fee!) This time, we saw several belugas, dolphins, sea lions and a whole bunch of penguins. (What do you call a whole bunch of penguins? A SCHOOL of fish. A POD of whales. What about the penguins?)
We took time out for a snack on the patio... like this headless penguin cookie. He probably has a big old group of penguins looking for him. If I knew what the lot of them were called, I would sound more intelligent, but for now "big old group" will have to do.
Sophia snagged my camera and forced this next one... it was SO BRIGHT OUT. I could hardly open my eyes.
It's always at this point I think, "Maybe I'll let my hair grow." I know it's stupid and crazy...but it passes through my mind every single time!
Don't think any of that was going through Lilah's mind...
Once we were adequately hydrated, we ventured back in, pumping ourselves up with the knowledge we only had the dolphin show and one other part of the aquarium to tackle.
Then finally, time for the whales and dolphins. They have revamped the show...
Kids were pretty excited...
By the time it was over, we were all exhausted and hungry...
And surprisingly, he was the best behaved one in the car.
It was a bit stressful, but I think totally worth it. Next time I might go when it's not Good Friday. Not spring break and not without a stroller.
...but we made some memories...and that's all that matters.
