We've been business owners for about a year and a half now, but I've been a big dreamer my whole life. I believe God made us for a distinct and unique purpose and while it is an ever-growing, ever-changing thing, it's real. You're here for a reason.
And once you discover that reason--your big "yes"--you have a choice. You can ignore it (which is really easy to do because God often asks us to step outside our comfort zone to fulfill it) or you can take a step of faith.
One tiny step is often the most terrifying part. Because that is when the enemy attacks.
It's easy to think that once you get your life right with God, everything is going to fall in to place. And you're going to be happy all the time. That life is easy and fun and peaceful.
I wish that were true.
The truth is, once you get your life right with God, there is a very real opposition that mobilizes to break you down. In my experience, when you're preparing to take a big leap of faith or to invest yourself in something that may make a significant difference in your life or the lives of others, there are three main areas to cover in prayer.
1. Your Health. (Or the health of those you love.)
You decide to start a business/direct a show/sell your artwork/write a book/ get serious about your purpose and you throw your back out/come down with the flu/have migraines that last weeks at a time/find a lump.
Friends, this is textbook attack. Sometimes, it's not even a real health issue, but the threat of one that fills your mind with so much worry you can barely think straight. It consumes you with fear--the kind that paralyzes and cripples you. It's awfully difficult to carry on in your purpose when your mind is so torn up.
God's word is FULL of promises about health and healing. And He always makes good on a promise. (I promise.) Cling to these. Write them on your mirror. Speak them out loud. Memorize them. Breathe them when you have no words of your own.
2. Your relationships.
You're finally moving forward with the dream God's given you and your relationships start to unravel from the inside.
Gotta love when you're at odds with your husband/family/best friend. It's nearly impossible to shove conflict to the back of your mind and move forward, but recognize it for what it is. Adam and I almost never argue, but when we do--when there is any kind of turmoil in our home--I can almost always point it back to a big decision we've made that requires extreme faith AND a solid relationship.
3. Your money, honey.
Money is literally the bane of my existence. I hate thinking about it. It requires me to do math, which makes my spirit die a little on the inside, so when numbers stop adding up, fear sets in.
Tell me you've been there too.
Someone crashed in to our car? Three of us need glasses? The fuse in the bathroom broke? We owe how much in taxes? Then: Our kids aren't going to be able to go to school next year. I'm going to have to homeschool and I will inevitably fail them and they'll become the stupid kids who can't get in to a college and they'll fail at life all because I don't understand fifth grade math.
With these worse case scenarios come extreme anxiety.
But God says no weapon formed against me can prosper.
But God says HE is more than enough.
But God says HE will supply all my needs according to his riches in glory.
But God says HE can make a way where there is no way.
Do you know how many times I've seen this work in my own life? Just like I never see the HITS that seem to keep on coming, I NEVER see the blessing either...but it's coming. It just is. He said so, so it's true. It may not always LOOK like we expect it to, but it's there.
Be a big dreamer. Be a big doer. But life is going to try to keep you from stepping in to your purpose. It will feel like the end.
And that, my friends, is usually just the beginning.
